Assemblage

If it greatly resembles collage, assemblage distinguishes itself from it by the creation of works in three dimensions. It consists in the combination of various objects or fragmented pieces to form a sometimes surprising whole. The art of assemblage has been experimented with by many famous artists, such Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven, Marcel Duchamp, Pablo Picasso, Kurt Schwitters and Jean Dubuffet. It became widely popularized in the 60s thanks to the exhibit "The Art of Assemblage" at the Museum of Modern Art of New York.
