Chinese Sculpture

Chinese artists came to the fore very early on in history. In the field of sculpture, some of the most ancient artifacts discovered date back more than 10,000 years! Chinese sculpture evolved over the course of multiple dynasties, each with its own characteristics.

Thus, the Shang Dynasty, having commenced around 1700 BC, concentrated on making bronzes, whereas the Han period, in 200 BC, was mainly interested in precious metals. It was approximately at that time that sculptures of Buddhist inspiration began to make their appearance, marking the debut of a production of a more pronounced spiritual character.
