Drawing by Leonardo da Vinci Enlarge

The Feast of Santa Maria della Neve
(Leonardo da Vinci, 1473, Public domain)

A drawing is a work generally made on a removable support using a medium, whether colored or not, such as pencils, feathers, pastels, crayons, or charcoal.

Requiring relatively little means, it's often used as the basis for more complex artistic creations in the fields of architecture, design, painting, sculpture, and industrial drawing.

However, drawing exists over and beyond a simple sketch. The precision of the lines and quality of the effects, in particular gradations, greatly depends on the technical skills of the artist. It was especially during the last century that drawing came to the fore of visual arts with the rise in popularity of the comic strip.
