Did You Know ? (Direct Carving)
The technique of "Direct Carving" in sculpture on wood or stone consists in creating a work from raw material without any sketch (or almost none) or any measurement being used to guide the sculptor. The artist is thus inspired by the shape of the chosen material to create his work.
This type of "carving by subtraction" is highly demanding because once removed, it's impossible to re-glue the piece and go backwards in time. It's not excluded that errors arise during carving, but these can be exploited to the advantage of the sculpture by the artist working on it.
