The Djembe

The djembe is a percussion instrument made out of a wooden structure in the form of a chalice, over which is stretched a skin. It equally includes a tuning system, using ropes or metal rings.

Native to West Africa, it's one of the most widely used instruments to mark the beat during lively dances. Rarely played alone, it's generally accompanied by other djembes or instruments. It appeared in the West during the 50's and came into vogue in the 80's.
