Egyptian Sculpture

Egyptian art was among the most vast and complex. Their sculptures in particular testified to the omnipresence of religious beliefs in the lives of this very ancient people. The representations of divinities were great in number, often mixing human and animal traits.

The Egyptians of antiquity granted great importance to funeral art, making their graves and tombs imposing works. Statues were equally sculpted to represent the personality, physical appearance, and attributes of the deceased. They immortalized, by means of such works, important people, for example, the Pharaohs.

Bas-reliefs were very widespread, illustrating scenes of everyday life, and often accompanied by hieroglyphs. These creations enable us today, moreover, to learn a great deal about the lives of Egyptians at the time.
