The First Steps of the Theater in America

The very first performance presented on American territory took place on April 30, 1598, near Rio Grande, New Mexico. It was a comedy to celebrate the taking possession of the territory by Spain.

It was only in 1606 when a second performance, in French this time, was put on by Marc Lescarbot at Port-Royal. Including songs and dances, the play, entitled "The Theater of Neptune", depicted travelers and Amerindians, under the direction of Lescarbot, considered the first poet of New France.

The theater subsequently had a good deal of difficulty developing in the New World, being long at the mercy of the moral and political authorities.
