Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933)
For those interested in art nouveau, the surname of American Louis Comfort Tiffany is synonymous with objects of decoration, stained glass, and more particularly stained-glass lampshades.
Charles Lewis Tiffany, father of the American artist, was the founder of the famous jewelry house Tiffany's, whose shop window actress Audrey Hepburn wishfully gazed at in the beginning of Breakfast at Tiffany's, 1961.
After studies in Paris and a prolonged stay in Europe where he painted, Louis Comfort Tiffany returned to the United States during the 1870's and founded a glassworks in New York in 1885. It was at this moment that he experimented with stained glass and perfected opalin glass, a kind of glass with iridescent reflections, recalling opal and to which he owes his fame.
