Metaphysical Painting

The artistic movement Pittura metafisica, or metaphysical painting, was born in 1917 in Italy. Its founders were the painters Giorgio De Chirico and Carlo Carrà. No true group formed, however, around these two artists. Only a few compatriot painters, including Giorgio Morandi and Filippo de Pisis, claimed to belong to this movement for a short time.

Metaphysical Painting had a significant influence on the Dada and Surrealist movements. The followers of Metaphysical Painting created enigmatic worlds, and seemed to want to go beyond the mere physical appearance of objects and places in quest of some elusive meaning and feeling of strangeness to be given off by their works.
