Oral Tradition

Oral tradition allows a people or nation to preserve its history and folklore without resorting to writing. Before the propagation of the latter almost everywhere on the face of the planet, orality was the principal means for the transmission of tales, legends, past events and genealogical information from one generation to the next.

During antiquity, orators were highly respected and attracted great crowds. The later the arrival of written language into regions, the more they were endowed with a longer and more highly rich oral tradition. However, unlike writing, which leaves material evidence, the historic truthfulness of the tales of oral tradition remains difficult to prove.
