Retouching

Today, it's a secret to no-one that the photos which flood magazines have been greatly retouched by computer. The advent of digital allowed images to be transformed until they were virtually unrecognizable.

In the field of argentic photography, retouching is done by hand. Various types of ink or pencils are used to remove the defects from the photograph (scratch, dots, spots…) or improve the image.

In the past, one had to resort to, for black-and-white photos, a retouching technique using India ink, diluted in water to produce various shades of gray.
