Traditional Dance

Traditional dance finds its roots in the history of the people who perpetuated it from one generation to the next. It's characterized by its non-elitistism and strong attachment to traditions, a peculiarity which reveals itself in both in the costumes and movements. It is generally practiced in groups, between members of the same community or within one ethnic group.

In Canada, it's somewhat difficult to identify the principal traditional dances due to important cultural mixing. However, we do find traditional dances in more isolated peoples, including certain Aboriginal communities. Immigration equally gives rise to a great profusion of traditional dances from various countries across the world.
